Davood Roostaei is Painting for the Freedom of Iran |
Davood Roostaei is an artist who is from another world. A world full of magic and mystical secrets. He was born in a small Persian town whose name when translated means Mirage.
He is of royal decent. His ancestors once sat upon the legendary Peacock Throne and ruled Persia for more than a century. He became a master rather early on in his home country, but he did attend a very special art academy there. He spent two years in jail, and it was there in solitary confinement and the dark cell where he discovered his inner eye as the source of his artistic inspiration. After being released he managed to escape to Germany. Since then he has been working tirelessly on himself, his artistic mission, and developing his own unique style of painting, called cryptorealism. This method reconciles the major currents of contemporary art, realism and abstraction, and at the same time, spans the bridge between the Orient and the Occident, between the deeply rooted fear of images in Judaism and Islam and the passionate love of images in the West. The term cryptorealism originates from the art critic Prof. Dr. Hanns Theodor Flemming and it knows nothing of what is ostensible or superficial. It looks behind the façades of mere appearances and makes the light which does not emanate from this world become visible.
This painting starts from the great Cyrus and Iranian culture from the right and ends with the freedom of Iran at the left with so many other details. He is now painting for Iran. For the freedom of Iran

Schoenberg: Six Little Pieces, Op. 19 (1911) |
from Schoenberg's preface to Webern's Sechs Bagatellen, Op. 9 (and equally applicable to these pieces):
"Though the brevity of these pieces is a persuasive advocate for them, on the other hand that very brevity itself requires an advocate.
Consider what moderation is required to express oneself so briefly. You can stretch every glance out into a poem, every sigh into a novel. But to express a novel in a single gesture, a joy in a breath–such concentration can only be present in proportion to the absence of self-pity.
These pieces will only be understood by those who share the faith that music can say things which can only be expressed by music.
These pieces can face criticism as little as this–or any–belief.
If faith can move mountains, disbelief can deny their existence. And faith is impotent against such impotence.
Does the musician know how to play these pieces, does the listener know how to receive them? Can faithful musicians and listeners fail to surrender themselves to one another? But what shall we do with the heathen? Fire and sword can keep them down; only believers need to be restrained.
May this silence sound for them."
From a recital performance by me (on a finicky piano, apologies for numerous voicing errors), April 2006.
Art by Arnold Schoenberg, from http://www.schoenberg.at . Meant only as a visual companion, not as a way to read programmatic meaning into the pieces (which I perceive as completely abstract, with the possible exception of number six). The last piece, and the last painting, are a reaction to the death and burial of Schoenberg's friend and early apologist Gustav Mahler.

Art:21 | Trenton Doyle Hancock |
Trenton Doyle Hancock's works tell the story of the Mounds—a group of mythical creatures that are the tragic protagonists of an unfolding epic. Influenced by the history of painting, especially Abstract Expressionism, Hancock transforms traditionally formal decisions—such as the use of color, language, and pattern—into opportunities to convey narratives.
Trenton Doyle Hancock is featured in the Season 2 episode "Stories" of the Art21 series "Art:21 -- Art in the Twenty-First Century".

Moto Ohtake "Airborne 2008" |
From the exhibition Sculpture in Motion at the Atlanta Botanical Garden on view through October 2008 and curated by Brigitte Micmacker from Sculpturesite Gallery. Curator's commentary: "Moto Ohtake references the "anatomy of nature" in his sculpture, but his "life long interest in the manifestations of nature on a micro and macroscopic level" have encouraged him to juxtapose cosmic symbolism with abstract interpretations of simple shapes found in nature and representations of their crystalline structure. Airborne 2008, as sited among the Garden's magnificent trees, stands as a fantastical, esoteric tree with shimmering stainless steel leaves, a perfect juxtaposition of "opposing factors such as chaos and order, simplicity and complexity", a reminder that all living organisms are intrinsically interconnected."

Ima keep runnin one neva runnin outta money
Ima dog ima stunt

And it looks like ima die like this
[Birdman]
Cuz we be stunin on these bitches
Get money on these bitches
$250 on the wrist nigga we be the illest
We be the realist

Uptown soldier with the money to the ceilin
Shinin like a diamond from a eagle to a pigeon
Birds on the wire 100 deep and we chillin
Finga on the trigga, thats the uptown livin
High to the sky no dobbin for fishes
Hustlin, doin donuts in the lam
Candy on the slam
50 on the av
100 at the crib
Get it how you live
Stuntin on these bitches red diamonds how i feel
I run this bitch
[Lil Wayne]
And ima keep runnin
Ima keep runnin one neva runnin outta money
Ima dog ima stunt
If i dont do nothin
And my car so pretty all these hoes wan f**k it
I got pussy wet paint
Big boy shoes
Soft ass seats and my trunk go boom
I gotta black ass gun
And a bad yello bitch
And it looks like ima die like this
[Birdman]
Im a uptown solider
Know how I roll her
Money go get her, MLB all over
Hustlin with the birds, go and take it off his shoulder
Grinding with the homies, got the game out the nose
100 gs wrap, hood with a strap
Blowin on the dojo, nigga stuntin in a 'lac
Chicken in the oven, wall safe for the stack
Bought a brand new range, and a brand new 'bac
Old school caddy, fifth wheel slab back
Brand new truck, a brand new bike
A brand new house, a brand new ?
A brand new bitch with a hood rich life
I run this bitch
[Lil Wayne]
And ima keep runnin
Ima keep runnin one neva runnin outta money
Ima dog ima stunt
If i dont do nothin
And my car so pretty all these hoes wan f**k it
I got pussy wet paint
Big boy shoes
Soft ass seats and my trunk go boom
I gotta black ass gun
And a bad yello bitch
