Schoenberg: Six Little Pieces, Op. 19 (1911) |
from Schoenberg's preface to Webern's Sechs Bagatellen, Op. 9 (and equally applicable to these pieces):
"Though the brevity of these pieces is a persuasive advocate for them, on the other hand that very brevity itself requires an advocate.
Consider what moderation is required to express oneself so briefly. You can stretch every glance out into a poem, every sigh into a novel. But to express a novel in a single gesture, a joy in a breath–such concentration can only be present in proportion to the absence of self-pity.
These pieces will only be understood by those who share the faith that music can say things which can only be expressed by music.
These pieces can face criticism as little as this–or any–belief.
If faith can move mountains, disbelief can deny their existence. And faith is impotent against such impotence.
Does the musician know how to play these pieces, does the listener know how to receive them? Can faithful musicians and listeners fail to surrender themselves to one another? But what shall we do with the heathen? Fire and sword can keep them down; only believers need to be restrained.
May this silence sound for them."
From a recital performance by me (on a finicky piano, apologies for numerous voicing errors), April 2006.
Art by Arnold Schoenberg, from http://www.schoenberg.at . Meant only as a visual companion, not as a way to read programmatic meaning into the pieces (which I perceive as completely abstract, with the possible exception of number six). The last piece, and the last painting, are a reaction to the death and burial of Schoenberg's friend and early apologist Gustav Mahler.

Art:21 | Trenton Doyle Hancock |
Trenton Doyle Hancock's works tell the story of the Mounds—a group of mythical creatures that are the tragic protagonists of an unfolding epic. Influenced by the history of painting, especially Abstract Expressionism, Hancock transforms traditionally formal decisions—such as the use of color, language, and pattern—into opportunities to convey narratives.
Trenton Doyle Hancock is featured in the Season 2 episode "Stories" of the Art21 series "Art:21 -- Art in the Twenty-First Century".

Moto Ohtake "Airborne 2008" |
From the exhibition Sculpture in Motion at the Atlanta Botanical Garden on view through October 2008 and curated by Brigitte Micmacker from Sculpturesite Gallery. Curator's commentary: "Moto Ohtake references the "anatomy of nature" in his sculpture, but his "life long interest in the manifestations of nature on a micro and macroscopic level" have encouraged him to juxtapose cosmic symbolism with abstract interpretations of simple shapes found in nature and representations of their crystalline structure. Airborne 2008, as sited among the Garden's magnificent trees, stands as a fantastical, esoteric tree with shimmering stainless steel leaves, a perfect juxtaposition of "opposing factors such as chaos and order, simplicity and complexity", a reminder that all living organisms are intrinsically interconnected."

What if an abstract painting could move?
The setting: Rotterdam. Before sunrise. On my way to the airport. Time for just a few more shots. But it's so dark. Just one more.
